The community of St. George welcomed His Grace, Bishop MARK of the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany. His Grace presided over the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, which included the ordination of Deacon Edmund Abodeely, the elevation of Subdeacon James Atty, the Service of the Great Blessing of the Water, the installation of the 2008 Parish Council and the induction of Joyce Ingels into the Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch.

Orthodox Communities Concelebrate with Bp. MARK of Toledo

On January 5, 2008, the paramon of Epiphany, three Orthodox communities gathered together at Ellis Park in Cedar Rapids to celebrate the Service of the Outdoor Blessing of the Water. His Grace, Bishop MARK of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America (Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest), presided with Rev. Frs. Fred Shaheen (St. George), Ciprian Sas (St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church), and Ignatius Valentine (St. Raphael Antiochian Orthodox Church in Iowa City). Many faithful from the area came out to pray and see a wooden cross tossed into the Cedar River and then retrieved.

The blessing of outdoor bodies of water is in commemoration of Jesus' condescending to be baptized by John in the Jordan, which renders all water sanctified. This is the event that is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on the Great Feast of Epiphany (Theophany).
